How To Overcome Resistance To Change

What Is Resistance To Change?

Resistance to change is something we all experience at some point in our lives. It’s a natural reaction to uncertainty and the fear that often comes with new situations or experiences. Our mind and body are used to things being a certain way, and when presented with a different possibility, we don’t always respond from a place of openness and acceptance.

That’s why, if you want to grow and move forward in any area of your life, it’s essential to identify and overcome this resistance.

Leading Causes Of Resistance

Three primary causes generate resistance to change:

1. Fear Of Failure:

The possibility of failure causes resistance to change

Fear of failure is the concern that trying something new might not work out. For a successful woman like you who is used to facing and overcoming challenges, this may not be an issue. However, for others, the mere possibility of not achieving the desired outcome can be paralyzing.

2. Fear Of Success

It might sound surprising to a high achiever like you, but fear of success also exists. This is the fear that fulfilling the change you desire could be so overwhelming that neither you nor those around you are prepared to handle it. Social pressure, expectations, and feelings of unworthiness are some of the root causes.

Hence, even the fear of envy or resentment from others can make us unconsciously perceive success as something negative.

3. Fear Of Judgement

Social pressure is another reason

Fear of being judged is a common concern for many women. In some cases, it shows up as intense anxiety or persistent worry about being watched, evaluated negatively, or criticized.

When this concern becomes overwhelming, it can limit you and block your ability to move forward in life… all because of the infamous “what will people think?”

How To Overcome The Resistance To Change?

1. Identify which of these 3 fears is holding you back

Become aware of which fear (failure, success, or judgment) is stopping you. The more precise you are about what’s causing your resistance, the easier it will be to take the actions needed to move forward.

2. Observe how the resistance is manifesting

Una parte de ti quiere cambiar y la otra no te deja
One part of you wants one thing, and another part wants something else.

Sometimes one part of you wants change while another part fights back; this is unconscious resistance, and it can manifest in various ways:

  • Procrastination: Not doing what you know you need to do to create the change you want.
  • Self-sabotage: When things are going well, unconsciously finding a way to ruin them.
  • Perfectionism: Waiting for everything to be perfect before taking action.
  • Indecision: Sometimes you want change, sometimes it feels easier to leave things as they are.
  • Lack of clarity: Not being clear on what you want, and using it as an excuse to avoid taking the first step.

Observe how you feel about the change you want to make and what you’re unconsciously doing (or not doing) to stop you from taking aligned action.

3. Explore the hidden benefits of staying in the same place

Try this journaling exercise:

What hidden benefits do I get from staying in my current situation?

Maybe it’s security, attention, empathy, or excuses not to do what you know you should be doing.

What’s the downside of achieving the change I want? What would be different in my life? How would I feel about it? How might people around me react?

Understand and connect with your resistance to change

Resistance to change is a real phenomenon and one of the primary reasons we often fail to achieve the transformations we desire. Therefore, it is essential to learn how to identify this resistance to prevent it from unconsciously controlling us. By doing so, we can empower ourselves to take control of our true aspirations and dreams.

Letting go of fear isn’t always easy, but you can learn to view it as a signal that you’re on the brink of significant change: ready to break old patterns and enter a new phase of growth.

If you want to learn more about fear of failure, fear of success, and fear of judgment (and how to manage them so they no longer hold you back), I highly recommend the book: The Greatness Mindset” by Lewis Howes.
